Story by Mark Jonas
What a year it has been for our Senior Women’s team. It has been brilliant to have these girls on board under the NRFC Umbrella with the enthusiasm, excitement and support that they have brought to our club in what has been a tough year for our boys.
Considering this was a side that came together very quickly is a testament to this group with limited football experience to how well they have learnt the skills of our great game, under the guidance of first time Coach, Joel Stephens and the experienced coaching credentials of Assistant Coach, Dalls van Unen has helped to get our Senior Women in the finals in their inaugural year.
This coming Saturday our girls will take on Park Orchards in the Second Semi for a spot in the “Senior Women’s North Division” Grand Final a fortnight later.
So how well have our Senior Women gone this year i hear you ask? Well the below makes for some great reading.
Our Senior Women not only finished top of the ladder with just one defeat in their 14 Home & Away Games taking out the minor Premiership, it is how they did it.
Considering that in the middle of the season we have up 7 girls out with injuries that kept them on the sideline for quite sometime. This alone shows how all girls in the side were able to rise to the occasion week in, week out.
It 14 Games of Football, they kicked a staggering, 161 Goals & 152 Points for a combined total of 1,118 points but just as important they only conceded 18 Goals & 22 points which is a combined total of 130 points which ironically is close to the average winning margin of half of their games!! In 11 of the 14 Games they kept their opposition to less than 10 points!
Lead by Captain, Lauren “Skip” Harris who kicked 30 Goals (hope i got that correct as i feel a text message coming my way), but could have been a lot more if not missing half the season with a hand injury along with the experience of Melissa Gilmore with 19 Goals playing off the half forward flank along with Tayla Deane coming off the wing with 16 majors. Lauren & Melissa who have played at a higher level have been brilliant with our young list.
To watch them is exciting, to see the way they move the ball from coast to coast is as good as it gets and the speed with some of our girls like Chelsea van Unen, Lily Peacock & Danielle Rushford is electrifying.
Luckily girls like Courtney Madeley, Chelsea Willis, Kylie Rule, Sherie Wood, Abby Marshall Eliza Tonkin & Jessica Lane have been like bank managers after the Royal Commission as they have been pretty measly down back, to concede only 18 goals in 14 games of footy would keep any coach happy.
If any of NRFC members can make it out on Saturday to catch the game, you will see a great display of footy and the girls would love the support.
Below are all details for their game and the side that will take to the field to represent our Club.
