After a very good win last week against Doncaster it was important that the boys backed up
this effort with a win this week against Montrose. After a very hard fought match, with
Montrose putting up a big fight, we finally won and received 4 very important match points.
Although we had significant rain during the week the ground conditions were good. We
started the game well with quick play on football and a lot of hard running. Montrose back
men were holding us out until Jack Whelan received a free kick and kicked a long goal at the
6 minute mark. Mick Apeness took a strong pack mark and goaled for our second for the
quarter. Although the ball spent a lot of time in our forward half for the first quarter we
could only manage the 2 goals.
For the second quarter we could only manage 1 goal through Liam Taylor who roved the
pack well and goaled from the pocket. Montrose lifted their game and were running and
spreading well placing our defence under a lot of pressure, Michael Locco and Sam Whelan
repelled many attacks. Some undisciplined play by us gifted a goal to Montrose who went
on to win the quarter 3 goals to 1.
Montrose kicked a very early goal to start the third quarter, placing us under a lot of
pressure. The boys responded well. Michael Locco was taking numerous marks on our back
line holding out Montrose. Darcy Harris roved a ruck contest in our 50 for an excellent goal.
Aaron Fenton to Jayden Hoegel with a banana kick for a goal and then Dylan Spurrell
handballing to Matt Sheppard for a goal on the run, levelling the scores at three quarter time
at 45 each.
The last quarter saw a lot of running and strong play from Aaron Fenton, Jack Whelan and
Julian Petracca. Darcy Harris kicked our first goal after Big Mick had crushed the pack and
Darcy picked up the crumbs. Montrose fought back and scores were still level at the mid-point of the quarter. Jayden vanUnen marked and kicked a long range goal. Billy Schilling playing against his old club sensationally kicked the ball out of mid-air and kicked the goal
that sealed the match for us. He celebrated appropriately.
No football next week so the boys will need to prepare their bodies for the big match
against the league leaders Vermont on 15 June. Keep up the belief and remember our great
effort at Vermont last year (3 point defeat). We can do it.
