Saturday we went to Montrose in the second last game for the year. Montrose sat on the bottom of the ladder with no wins for the season and are heading back to division 1 in 2020. We were well aware, that this was their grandfinal and they were going to throw everything at us, especially on their life members day.

The morning started bad for us, with the late withdrawal of Mick Apeness.

Montrose jumped us from the first bounce, taking their opportunities early and constantly pumping the ball downhill into their forward line. At 1/4 time they were up by 25 points.

After a rev up from the coach the players come out and started well early, but after all the hard work, we only reduced the deficit by 1 point at 1/2 time.

The third quarter, the floodgates opened, and Montrose piled on 5 goals to 2, leading at 3/4 time by 43 points.

We started the final quarter with repeat entries, peppering the goals , but only returned 2 goals , 6 behinds. To make matters worse, a bad hamstring injury to Josh OBrien saw him limp from the ground.

The end result was 46 points. Really disappointing day.

Unfortunately we are limping to the line with our current outs and we have some players who are playing sore. There is no bigger task, then taking on Vermont .

We look forward to the challenge this week.

The weather returned to somewhat pleasant conditions on Saturday for our game against Montrose. After a solid performance the week prior, we were hoping to put our best foot forward to look to get a second win.

With the u/19s away this week, we again relied u/19s on the boys helping us out. The Club were able to arrange the early game to start early, giving us the guys an additional 20mins to trek up the hill. With only 14 reserves available, was great to have the u/19s arrive just prior to the game, with Jacob Bell, Papa, Declan, Kieren, Lachy Shield, Elliot, Stevo and Mitch Heckley all doubling up and Jesse Spence stepping out the u/19s to play a full game with the reserves. All again much appreciated lads for your efforts.

We started really well and were able to maintain the same form we had shown the previous week. We were tough at the contest and were able to move the footy forward well. At the 15 min mark of the first quarter we were up by a goal and in control of the game. However, Montrose kicked two late and got in front – but we felt we were right in the contest and saw a good opportunity to be competitive.

Unfortunately, from here the game started to slip from our control, and we re unable to maintain the same intensity. I think this was due to a Montrose intensity really stepping up and a mixture of tired legs in our squad with almost 50% already having played a full game.

Although the margin opened up, to the credit of the boys they kept trying their absolute best and tried to get themselves back into the contest. Couple of good highlights from Bailey Marshall with a very strong bump in the 2nd quarter, a couple of good goals from Jordan Abicair, Mossy and Dan Wright, the efforts from Belly, Jessie, Timmy Nathan and Papa in the backline to keep on trying for the entire game and to the midfield group led by Taz, Jordan Sultana and Jake Tyler who tried their best with little in the way of rotations.

A huge sing out to Kieran Hendley-Boys, who in the last 20 seconds of the game was caught needing to commit himself into awkward contest, and unfortunately paid the price for the courage for making the contest, with a couple of breaks to his jaw. A massive effort doubling-up in his second game for the day and even right at the end of the game was commitment to creating a contest for his teammates. We all wish him well with his recovery and will get around him over the next couple of weeks. On to Vermont next week. Let’s finish the season with a solid effort.

North Ringwood 5.0-30 5.2-32 5.2-30 7.3-45

Best Players: J. Murfett, J. Braunthal, J. Povey, M. Papadakis, J. Bell, T. Stubs

We took on Rowville in Round 17 at Home – The boys were keen for this game being at Home and they love playing on Quambee in the thick mud.

The weather was actually pretty good, once the fog lifted. We were the only game at home this week, the boys really wanted to keep their season alive and make it 3 wins in a row.

We started extremely well with our first goal coming through Lyall and quickly followed with a goal to Braunthal after some really good defensive work in our forward half. We were well on top in the middle and continued to capitalise with 2 quick goals to Povey and one to Bell.

We went into quarter to kicking 5 straight goals to one, cash in on some good work through the midfield by Murfett and Lyall.

We were feeling good about or start but new that Rowville were a quality side that would fight back, which they did fight back hard – but we managed to keep them to just one goal which was a great effort considering they had some momentum.

This quarter our back half worked really well through Church and Papp leading the way.

We went into halftime still 19 points up but new the game had lifted a notch and we need to continue to lift or we would get overrun, having said that Rowville really got on top this quarter and definelty had the better of us – getting within 3 points at 3 quarter time, there were some great efforts by Glassborow and Begg this quarter trying hard to reduce the damage.

After an average quarter it was still a positive to find ourselves 3 points up going into the last, we knew we would have to scrap and fight to win this one now.

Rowville kicked the first goal of the last quarter to give them a 2 point lead, Stubbs was working hard In our forward line to get something happening and it did Purbrick kicked a goal to give us the lead back – our mids were again working hard but we knew we would need at least another goal to win.

It came through Povey after turning his opponent inside out and snapping the goal, the message now was repeat stoppages and shut the game down for the remaining 3-4 minutes – which we did and did really well.

Great to see the boys winning 3 in a row and giving themselves a chance to make finals – doesn’t get any easier though we will take on ladder leaders Vermont to try and sneak into finals!!!

We’re in the granny!!!!

Our first final appearance was a hard-fought contest against a strong opposition in Park Orchards. Our preparation had stepped up a level in the week building up to this week’s game. A heightened sense of purpose and commitment from the team brought out the best in the group.

We travelled up to South Belgrave who were a great host for our 1st Semi-final appearance, we even had sunshine for most of the afternoon.

Our first quarter was a willing contest with a lot of tightly contested play with bodies going in and hitting hard for the full 20 mins.

A chance to settle and focus on our game plan was the message at ¼ time, and the team responded with a determined and strong response, our backline stood up under pressure and we headed into the major break with a good lead.

The grand final quarter turned out to be our best withstanding a willing Park Orchards to outscore them again by keeping them scoreless. A great credit to the team for their ability to withstand the physical pressure that Park Orchards applied, they were a very hard tackling opponent.

The final quarter was a battle of survival, with the game opening a little due to tired bodies all over the ground this allowed Park Orchards to score a couple of goals, but the lead was too far for them to get close in the end.

I believe the team has shown a great commitment to each other and when the pressure was on, they responded with tough footy and great attitude, our fitness and skills were thoroughly tested and came out winners. Congratulations on getting into the grand final ladies, but they don’t give cups away so let’s get our focus on the next two weeks of preparation and do everything we can on our control to achieve the ultimate success.

Senior Women’s Finals Campaign

Story by Mark Jonas

Hi Sainters

What a year it has been for our Senior Women’s team. It has been brilliant to have these girls on board under the NRFC Umbrella with the enthusiasm, excitement and support that they have brought to our club in what has been a tough year for our boys.

Considering this was a side that came together very quickly is a testament to this group with limited football experience to how well they have learnt the skills of our great game, under the guidance of first time Coach, Joel Stephens and the experienced coaching credentials of Assistant Coach, Dalls van Unen has helped to get our Senior Women in the finals in their inaugural year.

This coming Saturday our girls will take on Park Orchards in the Second Semi for a spot in the “Senior Women’s North Division” Grand Final a fortnight later.

So how well have our Senior Women gone this year i hear you ask? Well the below makes for some great reading.

Our Senior Women not only finished top of the ladder with just one defeat in their 14 Home & Away Games taking out the minor Premiership, it is how they did it.

Considering that in the middle of the season we have up 7 girls out with injuries that kept them on the sideline for quite sometime. This alone shows how all girls in the side were able to rise to the occasion week in, week out.

It 14 Games of Football, they kicked a staggering, 161 Goals & 152 Points for a combined total of 1,118 points but just as important they only conceded 18 Goals & 22 points which is a combined total of 130 points which ironically is close to the average winning margin of half of their games!! In 11 of the 14 Games they kept their opposition to less than 10 points!

Lead by Captain, Lauren “Skip” Harris who kicked 30 Goals (hope i got that correct as i feel a text message coming my way), but could have been a lot more if not missing half the season with a hand injury along with the experience of Melissa Gilmore with 19 Goals playing off the half forward flank along with Tayla Deane coming off the wing with 16 majors. Lauren & Melissa who have played at a higher level have been brilliant with our young list.

To watch them is exciting, to see the way they move the ball from coast to coast is as good as it gets and the speed with some of our girls like Chelsea van Unen, Lily Peacock & Danielle Rushford is electrifying.

Luckily girls like Courtney Madeley, Chelsea Willis, Kylie Rule, Sherie Wood, Abby Marshall Eliza Tonkin & Jessica Lane have been like bank managers after the Royal Commission as they have been pretty measly down back, to concede only 18 goals in 14 games of footy would keep any coach happy.

If any of NRFC members can make it out on Saturday to catch the game, you will see a great display of footy and the girls would love the support.

Below are all details for their game and the side that will take to the field to represent our Club.

Match Reports Round 16 v Doncaster

After 3 great wins on the day by the Women’s, Under 19’s and Reserves teams the pressure
was on the boys to bring home the quaddie. Unfortunately this was not to be.
Again, playing at home we had another day of shocking conditions. Significant rain in the
week, heavy rain on Saturday morning and snow in the nearby hills. It was freezing! With 3
games on the ground prior to the Senior’s game meant that the ground was in an appalling
state. The Doncaster coach, Stewart Kemperman said that in his long history in the EFL that
the conditions of our ground were the worst he could ever remember of any EFL ground. He
was sympathetic to our club in having to train and play in such conditions. Fortunately we
only have one more home game for the year in a fortnight’s time against Vermont (they’re
going to love playing at Quambee, a week before finals!). The Council has planned to start
the ground redevelopment after our last game. Thank goodness!
Back to the game! The first quarter, like the whole game was a real slog. We had a majority
of the play with significantly more inside 50’s than the opposition, but were unable to
capitalize on this. We did not score a goal in this quarter. Doncaster assisted by a couple of
questionable umpiring decisions seized their limited opportunities, scoring 3 for the quarter.
They placed score board pressure on us which we were unable to overcome for the rest of
the match.
Our first goal and only goal for the first half came at the 9 minute mark of the second when Matt Cullinan
received a free kick and goaled. This quarter was very even with both sides struggling. At
half time Paris asked the boys to stop trying to play pretty football which doesn’t work in
the conditions. Get the ball to your foot quickly and keep moving it forward and put more
pressure on your opponents were the instructions.
The third quarter again saw both sides only kick one goal each. At the 7 minute mark Mick
Apeness won the ball from a ruck contest and snapped a goal.
Three goals down at ¾ quarter was a big an ask to win the game and when Doncaster won
the first centre clearance in the last quarter and drove the ball forward for a goal in 20
seconds it was virtually game over. Jack Whelan kicked our first at the midpoint of the
quarter. Straight after that the new 6x6x6 rule came into play when we did not have the required number in our forward line which saw Doncaster receive a free kick and 25 meter
penalty from the centre for a gifted goal. Kyle Eliott won a big knockout from the centre
which went to Matt Sheppard on the wing who launched a bomb from outside 50 which
skidded through for a goal.
Dylan Spurrell played a good game in the conditions with his outside running game. Both
Aaron Fenton and Jack Whelan revelled in the conditions and again provided excellent
performances. Our three big men Kyle Eliott, Matt Cullinan and Mick Apeness all had strong
influences on the game whether in the ruck or on our forward line.
Overall it was a disappointing loss for our boys.
Next Saturday we take on Montrose up in
the mountains. Montrose, whilst not having won a game for the year will be looking forward
to playing us as they have been very competitive in recent games. We need to be switched
on and ready for quite a fight. Get to training this week boys and prepare hard for this big
game.
Go Saints!

Saturday we took on Doncaster at home.
Conditions were wet, very wet. and the ground represented a traditional Quambee track – which we
have not seen is a number of years, having a Heavy 10 rating.
We again were very grateful for the 10 or so of the u/19s boys that offered the services to help us
out after playing their full game. Thanks to Aiden G, Lachy Shield, Papa, Josh Povey, Toby Godfrey,
Decers, Belly, Liam Lyall, Jesse, Churchy and Elliot Purbrick for all helping us out – some for the entire
game and some for part.
Dan Wood played his 150th game for the club as well and the boys were keen to get up for him.
Our focus for the day was to be strong at the contest and put our energy towards meterage and just
chipping away and chipping away to create an advantage.
Our first quarter we started playing the brand we wanted to. The contest was tight, but we probably
gave our opposition a couple of opportunities in their forward movements, which they hit the score
board. I felt at quarter time we were in control of the game, but we just needed to keep chipping away
at them and making the game a gritty contest at the coal face.
The second quarter we really took control and were able to start setting up well behind the contest
as well as being very strong at the contest. The game really started falling our way, and although
there was only a small change on the scoreboard, the intent to chip away contest to contest was
working in our favour.
The third and fourth the flood gates opened up for us and we were able to benefit and be rewarded
for the work in the first half.
Jake Tyler and Jordan Sultana were fantastic all day for us battling away. I thought our backline were
really solid for the entire game, with Tim Nathan, Bailey Marshall, Jesse Spence, Duncan Atherton,
Papa, Belly, Johno and Aidan all playing their roles through defence.
Josh Taratuta worked his backside off all day in the ruck, and Mossy, Herb (Elliott Purbirck), Toby and
Woody in his 150th up forward were rewarded for their efforts hitting the score board.
After a number of tough followed by competitive weeks, a win wasn’t far way as is great reward for
the boys. Onto Montrose next week for 2 in a row. Go Saints.

Goal Kickers: M. Heckley, T. Godfrey

We took on Norwood in Round 16 at Home – This was always going to be a tough
game; the weather was horrendous and Quambee was back looking like the old days of a
big mud pit.
It was a big day for the club with 4 games on the card, the Girls had got the club off
to a good start with a big win and we wanted to continue that with another good
performance.
The boys were very keen to back up their win last week with another win and we
knew in order to do this we would have to fight hard and scrap it out.
We started well with Godfrey kicking the only goal of the first quarter, giving us a
handy 6-point lead at quarter time. The boys had brought some really good intent again this
week – so it was all about maintaining that and continue the fight.
It wasn’t a pretty game but we weren’t concerned about that, we were more
focused on shutting the opposition down and locking the ball in as much as we could, creating
more and more stoppages.
We went in at half-time 3 points down with plenty left in the tank and again knowing
the game was ours to win. We lifted again in the third quarter getting a very important late
goal to Heckley, giving us a 4 point lead at 3 quarter time.
We had a good feeling that we could hang on to a win here if we continued the hard
work in the last which we did – keeping Norwood scoreless in the second half – thanks to
some great work across half back from Naismith, Stephens, Shield, Glassborow,
Cuthbertson and Papp.
The boys showed some true grit and determination to win this one, super proud of
their effort again, great to see them getting reward for the effort and commitment they
have shown all year.
Further to that, well done to the 10 boys that backed it up to get the cheeky double
with a Win in the reserves too.
