Saturday we went to Montrose in the second last game for the year. Montrose sat on the bottom of the ladder with no wins for the season and are heading back to division 1 in 2020. We were well aware, that this was their grandfinal and they were going to throw everything at us, especially on their life members day.
The morning started bad for us, with the late withdrawal of Mick Apeness.
Montrose jumped us from the first bounce, taking their opportunities early and constantly pumping the ball downhill into their forward line. At 1/4 time they were up by 25 points.
After a rev up from the coach the players come out and started well early, but after all the hard work, we only reduced the deficit by 1 point at 1/2 time.
The third quarter, the floodgates opened, and Montrose piled on 5 goals to 2, leading at 3/4 time by 43 points.
We started the final quarter with repeat entries, peppering the goals , but only returned 2 goals , 6 behinds. To make matters worse, a bad hamstring injury to Josh OBrien saw him limp from the ground.
The end result was 46 points. Really disappointing day.
Unfortunately we are limping to the line with our current outs and we have some players who are playing sore. There is no bigger task, then taking on Vermont .
We look forward to the challenge this week.

The weather returned to somewhat pleasant conditions on Saturday for our game against Montrose.After a solid performance the week prior, we were hoping to put our best foot forward to look to get a second win.
With the u/19s away this week, we again relied u/19s on the boys helping us out. The Club were able to arrange the early game to start early, giving us the guys an additional 20mins to trek up the hill. With only 14 reserves available, was great to have the u/19s arrive just prior to the game, with Jacob Bell, Papa, Declan, Kieren, Lachy Shield, Elliot, Stevo and Mitch Heckley all doubling up and Jesse Spence stepping out the u/19s to play a full game with the reserves. All again much appreciated lads for your efforts.
We started really well and were able to maintain the same form we had shown the previous week. We were tough at the contest and were able to move the footy forward well. At the 15 min mark of the first quarter we were up by a goal and in control of the game. However, Montrose kicked two late and got in front – but we felt we were right in the contest and saw a good opportunity to be competitive.
Unfortunately, from here the game started to slip from our control, and we re unable to maintain the same intensity. I think this was due to a Montrose intensity really stepping up and a mixture of tired legs in our squad with almost 50% already having played a full game.
Although the margin opened up, to the credit of the boys they kept trying their absolute best and tried to get themselves back into the contest. Couple of good highlights from Bailey Marshall with a very strong bump in the 2nd quarter, a couple of good goals from Jordan Abicair, Mossy and Dan Wright, the efforts from Belly, Jessie, Timmy Nathan and Papa in the backline to keep on trying for the entire game and to the midfield group led by Taz, Jordan Sultana and Jake Tyler who tried their best with little in the way of rotations.
A huge sing out to Kieran Hendley-Boys, who in the last 20 seconds of the game was caught needing to commit himself into awkward contest, and unfortunately paid the price for the courage for making the contest, with a couple of breaks to his jaw. A massive effort doubling-up in his second game for the day and even right at the end of the game was commitment to creating a contest for his teammates. We all wish him well with his recovery and will get around him over the next couple of weeks. On to Vermont next week. Let’s finish the season with a solid effort.

We took on Rowville in Round 17 at Home – The boys were keen for this game being at Home and they love playing on Quambee in the thick mud.
The weather was actually pretty good, once the fog lifted. We were the only game at home this week, the boys really wanted to keep their season alive and make it 3 wins in a row.
We started extremely well with our first goal coming through Lyall and quickly followed with a goal to Braunthal after some really good defensive work in our forward half. We were well on top in the middle and continued to capitalise with 2 quick goals to Povey and one to Bell.
We went into quarter to kicking 5 straight goals to one, cash in on some good work through the midfield by Murfett and Lyall.
We were feeling good about or start but new that Rowville were a quality side that would fight back, which they did fight back hard – but we managed to keep them to just one goal which was a great effort considering they had some momentum.
This quarter our back half worked really well through Church and Papp leading the way.
We went into halftime still 19 points up but new the game had lifted a notch and we need to continue to lift or we would get overrun, having said that Rowville really got on top this quarter and definelty had the better of us – getting within 3 points at 3 quarter time, there were some great efforts by Glassborow and Begg this quarter trying hard to reduce the damage.
After an average quarter it was still a positive to find ourselves 3 points up going into the last, we knew we would have to scrap and fight to win this one now.
Rowville kicked the first goal of the last quarter to give them a 2 point lead, Stubbs was working hard In our forward line to get something happening and it did Purbrick kicked a goal to give us the lead back – our mids were again working hard but we knew we would need at least another goal to win.
It came through Povey after turning his opponent inside out and snapping the goal, the message now was repeat stoppages and shut the game down for the remaining 3-4 minutes – which we did and did really well.
Great to see the boys winning 3 in a row and giving themselves a chance to make finals – doesn’t get any easier though we will take on ladder leaders Vermont to try and sneak into finals!!!

We’re in the granny!!!!
Our first final appearance was a hard-fought contest against a strong opposition in Park Orchards. Our preparation had stepped up a level in the week building up to this week’s game. A heightened sense of purpose and commitment from the team brought out the best in the group.
We travelled up to South Belgrave who were a great host for our 1st Semi-final appearance, we even had sunshine for most of the afternoon.
Our first quarter was a willing contest with a lot of tightly contested play with bodies going in and hitting hard for the full 20 mins.
A chance to settle and focus on our game plan was the message at ¼ time, and the team responded with a determined and strong response, our backline stood up under pressure and we headed into the major break with a good lead.
The grand final quarter turned out to be our best withstanding a willing Park Orchards to outscore them again by keeping them scoreless. A great credit to the team for their ability to withstand the physical pressure that Park Orchards applied, they were a very hard tackling opponent.
The final quarter was a battle of survival, with the game opening a little due to tired bodies all over the ground this allowed Park Orchards to score a couple of goals, but the lead was too far for them to get close in the end.
I believe the team has shown a great commitment to each other and when the pressure was on, they responded with tough footy and great attitude, our fitness and skills were thoroughly tested and came out winners. Congratulations on getting into the grand final ladies, but they don’t give cups away so let’s get our focus on the next two weeks of preparation and do everything we can on our control to achieve the ultimate success.
